Men's barbour wax jackets for sale navigating the Great British

In the countryside, they say you’re never more than six ploughed fields away from a wax jacket. Whether that’s true or not, this rugged, weather-hardened overcoat is a staple of the Great British outdoors.

The dense cotton twill construction is treated with paraffin, silk oil (sylkoil) or beeswax to achieve a sealed weather-proof surface. The oil coating becomes softer and more porous in warm temperatures and stiffer and more windproof in the cold, plus, the waxed layer picks up creasing and marks that add character as the jacket matures.

It was first used by ingenious Scottish fishermen in 15th century, who coated their sails and eventually their clothing with fish oils to make them waterproof. Then, from 1894, oilcloth importer John Barbour began producing at scale, hence “Barbour” becoming a shorthand nickname for the garment. Listed below are some of the finest, sleekest, waxiest jackets around.

Barbour Beacon
1/10

Barbour Beacon

Just like getting dial-up broadband, the Beacon range takes Barbour away from it's countryside heritage and hurls them towards modernity. It retains the waxed cotton construction and the cord collar, yet speaks to something more stripped back and minimal. £159. At asos.com

Filson
2/10

Filson

Filson, one might argue, is the American Barbour. It’s easy to see why with this 8oz waxed canvas shell cotton jacket. It switches out a traditional corduroy collar for a cotton moleskin, but in terms of ergonomics and practicality it boasts a comprehensive detachable hood and large pockets for storing all sorts of bounty. £425. filson.com

Wax London
3/10

Wax London

Wax London has taken the heritage countryside aesthetic of a waxed jacket and brought in some Scandinavian minimalism. Utilising the material’s impeccable weatherproofing qualities, this pared-down jacket brings weather resilience to the city with panache. £195. At John Lewis. johnlewis.com

Boden
4/10

Boden

This jacket comes with all of the bells and whistles: check lining, underarm eyelets in antique brass and a traditional corduroy collar. Boden has excelled in producing a unique worn blue colouring that gives it an already vintage waxed jacket aesthetic. If we’re honest with each other, the worn-in, creased, storied look is what we’re all really aiming for. £90. boden.com
